  • Mood:
Finally got to talk with the neurologist this evening. Mom's prognosis is not very good. The MRI this morning showed severe damage to multiple sections of the brain, affecting speech, motor skills, eye sight, balance and the ability to swallow. He said that she probably had either a blood clot or some plack that dislodge and exploded in her heart sending small fragments throughout her brain.

He said that the recovery time will probably be at least 6 months to a year before she regains about 80% of whatever she'll get back. But she will never recover fully. She will probably be released from the hospital in about a week to either a rehabilitation center or a nursing care facility, depending on whether she can swallow. If she can't, she will have to be in the nursing facility and they will have to implant a feeding tube to her stomach.

Knowing my mother, this isn't something she would be happy with. We've had conversations several times and she's always said she didn't want to be put in a nursing home.

One thing in her favor, she has always a real dynamo. Having more energy then everyone else around her. She's always been extremely independent and real fighter.

When we got ready to leave this evening, she was actually talking somewhat. However, her speech is still very slurred and hard to understand. She does have feeling on the right side, but only limited mobility. (She can barely move her fingers and toes and has difficulty opening her eye. Plus that side of her face is drooping.) But she does know who we are and where she's at. So I guess there is some small amount of hope.

Thanks for all the good thoughts and prayers.
